Cotton Kurta Opacity & Layering – FAQ

Cotton Kurta Opacity & Layering – FAQ

We want you to feel confident before you buy. Below are honest answers to the most common questions we receive about fabric opacity and layering for our cotton kurtas. Where we cannot give a universal answer, we tell you exactly what to look for or where to ask.

Fabric & Opacity

Are all cotton kurtas at IndiRaas fully opaque?

No — and we will not claim otherwise. Cotton weave, thread count, and finishing all affect how much light passes through a fabric. Lighter-weight cottons (such as mulmul, chanderi cotton, or voile-blend fabrics) are naturally more sheer, especially in bright sunlight or strong indoor lighting. Heavier weaves (such as cambric or dense kantha cotton) tend to be more opaque. Each product listing notes the fabric type; use that as your starting guide.

How do you test or determine opacity?

We assess opacity by holding the garment up to natural daylight — the most revealing condition. We do not test under artificial studio lighting alone, as that can make fabrics appear more opaque than they are outdoors. If a listing does not include an explicit opacity note, it has not been individually tested and rated by us.

Will the opacity change after washing?

Repeated washing can slightly thin cotton fibres over time, which may reduce opacity marginally. Following the care instructions on the label (usually a gentle cold-water wash) helps preserve the fabric's original weight and coverage.

What to Wear Underneath

Should I wear a slip or inner underneath my kurta?

For any kurta made from a lightweight or open-weave cotton — particularly mulmul, chanderi-cotton blends, or kurtas described as "airy" or "breathable" — we recommend pairing with a slip or a close-fitting inner in a colour that matches your skin tone or the kurta's base colour. This is the most reliable way to ensure comfort and coverage in all lighting conditions, regardless of the specific product.

What kind of inner or slip works best in warm weather?

A sleeveless or short-sleeved cotton or modal slip in a neutral or matching tone works well without adding significant warmth. Avoid synthetic inners that do not breathe; they will trap heat under a cotton kurta.

Do the kurta sets in your Kurta Sets collection include an inner or slip?

No. Unless explicitly listed as part of the product, inners and slips are not included with any kurta set. The set typically includes the kurta and the listed co-ord piece (dupatta, palazzo, or pants).

Product-Specific Questions

I want to know if a specific kurta is sheer before I buy. How can I find out?

The best options are:

  • Check the product listing — fabric type and any opacity notes are listed there.
  • Contact us directly — use the chat or contact form on our website and mention the exact product name or SKU. We will check and give you an honest answer before you place your order.
  • Look at the product photos — we photograph kurtas on a model in natural or near-natural light so you can assess drape and coverage yourself.

Can I return or exchange a kurta if I find it more sheer than expected?

Please refer to our Returns & Exchange Policy for full details. If you have a question about a specific order, contact us with your order number and we will do our best to help.
